"Are We
on the Verge of an E-Book Explosion?" is the cover story for the
October 2009 issue of Book
Businessmagazine. It is one of my favorite publishing
periodicals. Each month, from cover to cover, this magazine is
packed with relevant data, statistics and information to help its
readers unravel the complexities of the ever-changing publishing
industry. The timing of this topic, as the cover instantly
captured my attention, is impeccable. I am in the midst of
revising my rapidly growing publishing portfolio, which includes
current and upcoming books, articles and devotionals. With a new
deal to translate our first, and perhaps most recent (sixth), book into
French in January 2010, and with another inquiry from a Russian
publisher to do the same in their native language, it is clear that the
time is NOW to expand our offerings through the many mediums that are
upon us. Two of these mediums are electronic (e)-books and
Print-on-Demand (POD). These vast opportunities were precipitated
through advanced technological discoveries. That said, let's
explore the phenomena and look for ways for you to position yourself in
2010 and beyond.
Print is
still most publishers' bread and butter. This fact has not
changed. However, according to the "E-Paper Displays Report"
by display-technology information provider and consultancy
DisplaySearch, the e-paper display market will grow from 22 million
units to 1.8 billion units within less than ten years - 81 times its
current size. It is reported that there are currently 45
e-readers out there, however, new devices seem to launch monthly while
others have been discontinued as quickly and quietly as they came. The
five key e-reader components are worth note: (1) What market is being
served: Worldwide or just a specific region? (2) Is the unit wireless
or not? (3) What formats are supported: TXT, HTML, PDF, MP3,
MOBIPOCKET, RTF, JPG, EPUB, PNG? (4) Screen specifications: Stylus
touch-screen, B/W, or Color? (5) Price: These units currently range
from $249 to $1,000.
In parallel
with the dialogue and intrigue with the explosive e-book market, the
theme at this year's (May 2009) Independent Book Publisher's
Association Publishing University was "The Future of Publishing:
How to Thrive in a Digital World." The event was held during
Book Expo America in New York City. The digital revolution is
here, and in order to give readers as many options as possible, both
new and experienced publishers need to transform their content into
e-books - now. As for POD, the growth in digitally printed books
will be fueled by the increasing interest of publishers that intend to
use digital printing to cut costs and by the technology developments in
the area of high-speed ink jet. It is anticipated that, after
2012, the growth of digital printing will accelerate significantly as
the next generation of ink jet presses becomes widely available.
Some of the
leading digital book printers (Print-On-Demand - POD), as listed in the
August 2009 issue of Book
Businessmagazine, page 32, are Lightning Source, Color House
Graphics, Apex Book Manufacturing, Transcontinental, Digital Data
Group, and Bookmasters.

game and register for the October
29th event
